The flute is a musical instrument that is part of the woodwind group. Unlike most other woodwind instruments, sound is not produced by a vibrating reed, but by blowing air over a hole, like making a sound by blowing over the top of an open pop bottle.

Flutes are some of the earliest known musical instruments. A flute that is at least 35,000 years old was found in a cave in Germnay in 2008, becoming the oldest confirmed discovery of any musical instrument in history.

Flutes come in a number of types, ranging from the standard concert flute to the Indian bamboo flute to the Chinese flute. All make sound in the same basic way but produce different flavors of sound.

The standard concert flute is pitched in the key of C and has a range of three octaves starting with middle C. It is one of the highest of the standard concert instruments (piccolo is obviously higher). The flute is a common instrument among young students trying to find a favorite to focus on.
